To say that recruiting extremely talented people at the forefront of medical technology is critical to our success is quite the understatement. At huMannity Medtec, finding, retaining, and developing the dedicated team members that help advance life-changing medical device technology is an around-the-clock team effort. Luckily, huMannity has an edge when it comes to attracting the best and brightest – our mission.
“For folks who are looking for a really strong mission: helping improve people's lives, and for engineering folks looking for interesting, cutting-edge technology, not just software, but also hardware and materials, it's really compelling,” said Shawn Lewis, Vice President of Human Resources. “I think that's what distinguishes us from a typical Silicon Valley-type company.”
First impressions are a powerful tool to get people in the door, and there are a few factors that help huMannity retain a low employee turnover rate, which is key to the organization’s success. Clear and open communication is crucial for maintaining a positive and productive work environment, something often cited in huMannity employee feedback. Also important are quality relationships between leadership and employees, and employees having confidence that they have a voice within the company.
“We just had a ‘Meet the CEO’ coffee session for new employees - we had 20+ new hires in a conference room with our CEO Bob Greenberg, and it was scheduled for 30 minutes. It ran an hour,” said Lewis. “Bob could have continued talking with the team for another hour; that's how engaging the discussion was. People were asking a wide range of questions, from financials to what's next on our technology roadmap. The session was invaluable, and it was a great opportunity for everyone to get to know one another.”
What leads to a successful career at huMannity? In her 20 years of service, Director of HR Karen Morris thinks she’s identified a few common traits. People who have the most impact are committed, responsible, flexible, and willing to roll up their sleeves and help others.
“We’re looking for curious, capable people, who are humble,” said Lewis. “That really sums it up.”
Of course, much of huMannity’s unique character stems from our core mission at the intersection of innovation and solutions for unmet medical needs. It’s an important and omnipresent rallying point for everyone here, regardless of job title.
